Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (aka William and Kate) visited Klaxon Towers today.

It’s not everyday the Royal Family turns up at your office building, but they did today. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visited Only Connect, a charity in the same building as Klaxon that supports the rehabilitation of ex-offenders into the community and into employment.

They popped in to see how the charity is using drama to engage with young offenders and presumably also to give them a pat of the back for all their hard work. You can see my woeful picture of the Royal couple taken from our office window to the left.

Unfortunately they weren’t available to discuss b2b marketing or the importance of utility based marketing on this trip, but hopefully next time…

Flexible Working with Marketing Agency Klaxon

Last week I was interviewed about our marketing agency on BBC Radio 4 as part of National Work Life Week.

The interview was all about flexible working and of course achieving a good work life balance. Considering Klaxon is a marketing agency and therefore not in an industry known for its 9-5 culture, you might be wondering why.

Well we’re a little different.

All of our team works remotely and flexibly, choosing hours to suit them. They are focused on delivering outputs, rather than time spent in an office.

This is a direct result of Clare and I wanting a better balance between work life and family life. When we started out as Klaxon Ltd we wanted the ability to work around the needs of our young families. So apparently do the new members of our team, joining us for exactly that reason.

How do we make this possible? The answer is two fold:

  1. Business model
  2. Technology

We have setup our business to work in this way. The way we operate on a day-to-day basis, manage our clients and our team is all based around the core principle that we do not need to be in an office. In fact we could be anywhere.

Of course we use a range of different technologies to enable this model. From conference calls to cloud storage, CRM, social media and instant messaging, everything is managed via the web.  The technology we use is the engine of our remote agency model.

Studio Launches in Style

Studio Launch Party

Last week saw the momentus launch of Joinourstudio.com – the membership website we have been working on since February.

The idea behind the site is provide a platform for architects practices to engage with and employ architectural students, without the need for practices to pay expensive advertising charges or recruitment agency fees. It’s a radical idea which should hopefully overhaul the way architects are recruited – a much needed change for the industry.

Architects, join up now, it’s free after all.

It’s been a great project for us so far and we’re looking forward to getting started on phases 2, 3, 4….. Good to see the initiative achieving such high profile backing too – Angela Brady, President of the Royal Institute of British Architects, has supported the clients from day one and was there to deliver a speech at the kick-off too.
